Which films scared the **** out of you?

Which film has scared the hell out of you ? do you remember it to this day? have the memories ever caused you to sleep with the light on…? I thought so.  What was it that terrified you so much…was it the relentless tension, or a single image or moment?

Scary movies have always thrilled and delighted us; I think we all love a good scare in a film basically because we know we can just walk away from it when it is all finished…something we cannot do in real-life scary situations and there are plenty of those around.

I had a very fertile imagination as a young child (I still do) and I was also afraid of the dark so maybe I was one of those people who should never have been allowed to watch creepy movies, however I did, and I still bear the mental scars from one or two of them. The one film that scared the life out of me more than any other was…drum roll please!…that episode from the 1970’s thriller Trilogy of Terror with the actress Karen Black.

You know the one…where she plays a woman being terrorised in her apartment by a little voodoo doll that’s come to life. I saw that when I was about 14 and honestly it took me several years to get over it. What spooked me so much was the sound effects of the doll chasing her and the way the chase was filmed through the doll’s eyes. And that final shot…of the woman stabbing the floor with the knife whilst waiting for her mother to arrive…she turns into  a demon herself. So now that I have just given myself cold chills all over again here are some films that have given me my share of sleepless nights…

* Trilogy of Terror - the ‘doll’ episode

* The Blair Witch Project - I know, it’s corny to many people, but those final scenes where they are stumbling around the house in the woods in the pitch black…god almighty!

* Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte - not a horror film really but that scene where the meat cleaver is raised in the air Bruce Dern’s hand is chopped off and the blood sprays over the statue…

* The Exorcist - who hasn’t been scared by this film? the thing is we Catholics tend to believe this can actually happen!

* ‘IT’ - that clown from hell…those teeth

* The Ring - I saw this a couple of years back and really got the creeps. The image of that young girl coming towards the television out of the well; and the way the girl crawls up and out of the well…good scary stuff.
